Historia e psikologjisë është një rrugëtim i gjatë që përfshin zhvillimin e ideve mbi mendjen, sjelljen dhe ndërgjegjen njerëzore, që nga filozofët e lashtë deri te shkencëtarët modernë. Ajo ka kaluar nëpër faza të ndryshme të mendimit dhe hulumtimit shkencor, duke u formësuar nga filozofia, shkencat natyrore dhe konteksti kulturor i kohës.

Psikologjia përkufizohet si "studimi shkencor i sjelljes dhe proceseve mendore". Interesi filozofik për mendjen dhe sjelljen njerëzore daton që në qytetërimet e lashta të Egjiptit, Persisë, Greqisë, Kinës dhe Indisë.

Psikologjia si fushë e studimit eksperimental filloi në 1854 në Leipzig, Gjermani, kur Gustav Fechner krijoi teorinë e parë se si bëhen gjykimet rreth përvojave shqisore dhe si të eksperimentohen mbi to. Teoria e Fechner, e njohur sot si Teoria e Zbulimit të Sinjalit, parashikoi zhvillimin e teorive statistikore të gjykimit krahasues dhe mijëra eksperimenteve të bazuara në idetë e tij (Link, SW Psychological Science, 1995). Në 1879, Wilhelm Wundt themeloi laboratorin e parë psikologjik të dedikuar ekskluzivisht për kërkimin psikologjik në Leipzig, Gjermani. Wundt ishte gjithashtu personi i parë që iu referua vetes si psikolog . Një pararendës i dukshëm i Wundt-it ishte Ferdinand Ueberwasser (1752-1812), i cili e caktoi veten Profesor i Psikologjisë Empirike dhe Logjikës në 1783 dhe dha leksione mbi psikologjinë empirike në Universitetin e Vjetër të Münster, Gjermani.[1] Kontribues të tjerë të rëndësishëm të hershëm në këtë fushë përfshijnë Hermann Ebbinghaus (një pionier në studimin e kujtesës ), William James (babai amerikan i pragmatizmit ) dhe Ivan Pavlov (i cili zhvilloi procedurat që lidhen me kushtëzimin klasik ).

Menjëherë pas zhvillimit të psikologjisë eksperimentale, u shfaqën lloje të ndryshme të psikologjisë së aplikuar. G. Stanley Hall solli pedagogjinë shkencore në Shtetet e Bashkuara nga Gjermania në fillim të viteve 1880. Teoria arsimore e John Dewey e viteve 1890 ishte një shembull tjetër. Gjithashtu në vitet 1890, Hugo Münsterberg filloi të shkruante për aplikimin e psikologjisë në industri, ligj dhe fusha të tjera. Lightner Witmer themeloi klinikën e parë psikologjike në vitet 1890. James McKeen Cattell përshtati metodat antropometrike të Francis Galton për të gjeneruar programin e parë të testimit mendor në vitet 1890. Në Vjenë, ndërkohë, Sigmund Freud zhvilloi në mënyrë të pavarur një qasje për studimin e mendjes të quajtur psikoanalizë, e cila u bë një teori shumë me ndikim në psikologji.[2]

Shekulli i 20-të pa një reagim ndaj kritikës së Eduard Tiçenerit ndaj empirizmit të Wundt-it. Kjo kontribuoi në formulimin e biheviorizmit nga John B. Watson, i cili u popullarizua nga BF Skinner përmes kushtëzimit operant . Bihejviorizmi propozoi të theksohej studimi i sjelljes së hapur, sepse ajo mund të kuantifikohej dhe matej lehtësisht. Bihevioristët e hershëm e konsideronin studimin e mendjes shumë të paqartë për një studim shkencor produktiv. Megjithatë, Skinner dhe kolegët e tij studiuan të menduarit si një formë e sjelljes së fshehtë, në të cilën ata mund të zbatonin të njëjtat parime si sjellja e hapur.

Dekadat e fundit të shekullit të 20-të panë ngritjen e shkencës njohëse, një qasje ndërdisiplinore për studimin e mendjes njerëzore. Shkenca konjitive e konsideron përsëri mendjen si një subjekt për hetim, duke përdorur mjetet e psikologjisë njohëse, gjuhësisë, shkencës kompjuterike, filozofisë, biheviorizmit dhe neurobiologjisë . Kjo formë e hetimit ka propozuar që një kuptim i gjerë i mendjes njerëzore është i mundur dhe se një kuptim i tillë mund të zbatohet në fusha të tjera kërkimore, siç është inteligjenca artificiale .

Ekzistojnë ndarje konceptuale të psikologjisë në "forca" ose "valë", bazuar në shkollat e saj dhe prirjet historike. Kjo terminologji u përhap në mesin e psikologëve për të dalluar një humanizëm në rritje në praktikën terapeutike që nga vitet 1930 e tutje, i quajtur "forca e tretë", në përgjigje të tendencave deterministe të sjelljes së Watson dhe psikoanalizës së Frojdit.[3] Përkrahësit e psikologjisë humaniste përfshinin Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, Gordon Allport, Erich Fromm dhe Rollo May . Konceptet e tyre humaniste janë gjithashtu të lidhura me psikologjinë ekzistenciale, logoterapinë e Viktor Frankl, psikologjinë pozitive (e cila ka Martin Seligman si një nga mbështetësit kryesorë), qasjen e CR Cloninger ndaj mirëqenies dhe zhvillimit të karakterit, si dhe me psikologjinë transpersonale, duke përfshirë koncepte të tilla si vetë -transcektiviteti, vetë-transcektiviteti, shpirtërorja., dhe vëmendje .
