Ajo u lind më 22 nëntor 1984 në New York si Scarlett Marie Johansson. Prindërit e saj ishin të ndarë, për këtë arsye ajo jetoi disa kohë te babai saj në New York dhe disa kohë te nëna saj në Los Angeles. Si fëmijë vizitoi Scarlett The Actors Studio në New York. Ajo mbaroi 2002 shkollën Professional Children's School në Manhattan. Karrierën e aktrimit e filloi 1992 në Los Angeles në Off-Broadway lojën Sophistry, ku ajo luajti me Ethan Hawke.
