В конце творческого пути Перов обращается к русской истории. Он выбирает тему религиозного раскола XVII века, возникшего в результате церковных реформ патриарха Никона. Никита Пустосвят (настоящее имя – Добрынин Никита Константинович; прозвище "Пустосвят" было дано сторонниками официальной церкви; год рождения неизвестен – умер в 1682), суздальский священник, один из идеологов раскола. Церковный собор 1666–1667 осудил его и лишил сана. В 1682 раскольники воспользовались восстанием стрельцов в Москве и выдвинули требование, чтобы церковь вернулась к "старой вере". В Кремле состоялись "прения о вере", где Никита Пустосвят выступал главным оратором. В центре – сам Никита, рядом с ним монах Сергий с челобитной, на полу – Афанасий, архиепископ Холмогорский, на щеке которого Никита "запечатлел крест". В глубине – предводитель стрельцов князь И.А.Хованский. В гневе встала с трона царевна Софья, раздраженная дерзостью раскольников. На следующий день Никита и его сторонники были обезглавлены по обвинению в возмущении народа. Картину очень высоко ценил В.И.Суриков.
