Arti meksikan përbëhet nga arte pamor të ndryshme që u zhvillua mbi zonën gjeografike të njohur tani si Meksikë. Zhvillimin e këtyre arteve afërsisht ndjek historinë e Meksikës, të ndarë në epokën Mesoamerikean para hispanike, periudha koloniale, më tej e ndarë me periudhën e Luftës Meksikane të Pavarësisë. Arti meksikan është gjithashtu i mbushur në shumicën e rasteve a e herë me modele të ndërlikuar.[1]

Arti mesoamerikan është ai që prodhoj një rajon që përfshin shumë nga ajo që sot është Meksika qendrore dhe jugore, para pushtimit spanjoll të Perandorisë Aztec për një periudhë prej rreth 3.000 vjet nga 1500 p.e.s deri në 1500 e.r. Gjatë kësaj kohe, të gjitha ndikimet në prodhimin e artit ishin autoktonë, me artin e lidhur shumë me fenë dhe klasës sunduese. Kishte shumë pak dallim në mesin e artit, arkitekturës, dhe shkrimit. Pushtimi spanjoll shkoj deri në 300 vite sundim kolonial spanjoll, dhe prodhimi i arti mbeti i lidhur me fenë—pjesa më e madhe e artit ishte e lidhur me ndërtimin dhe dekorimin e kishave, por arti laik u zgjerua në shekullin e tetëmbëdhjetë, veçanërisht piktura casta, portretet, dhe piktura historike. Pothuajse i gjitha arti i prodhuar ishte në traditën Evropiane, në periudhën e vonshme koloniale artistë u trajnuan në Akademinë e San Carlos, por elementet autoktonë mbetën, duke filluar një akt balancues të vazhdueshëm në mes të traditave evropiane dhe autoktonë.[2]

Pas Pavarësisë, arti mbeti e fuqishëm në stilin evropian, por tema autoktone u shfaqën në vepra madhore pasi Meksika e pavarur kërkonte të bëhet dallimi i vetvetes nga e kaluara e saj koloniale spanjolle. Kjo preferencë për elemente autoktone vazhdoi në gjysmën e parë të shekullit të 20-të, me Realizmin Socialist ose Lëvizja Murale Meksikane e udhëhequr nga artistë të tillë si Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, dhe Fernando Leal, të cilët ishin ngarkuar nga qeveria e post-Revolucionit Meksikan që të krijojnë një tregim vizual të historisë dhe kulturës meksikane.

Forca e kësaj lëvizje artistike ishte e tillë që ajo preku teknologjitë e sapo shpikura, të tilla si fotografia dhe kinemaja, dhe fuqimisht e promovuan artin dhe vepra artizanale popullore si pjesë e identitetit të Meksikës. Që nga vitet 1950, Arti Meksikan ka lënë anash stilin mural dhe ka qenë e më të globalizuar, duke integruar elementë nga Azia, me artistë dhe filma meksikanë që kanë një ndikim në skenën globale.

Arti para-hispanik i Meksikës i takon rajonit kulturor të njohur si Mesoamerika, e cila përafërsisht korrespondon me Meksikën qendrore në në Amerikën Qendrore,[3] përfshin tre mijë vjet nga 1500 pes në 1500 es në përgjithësi e ndarë në tri periudha: Para klasike, klasike dhe pas klasike.[4] Kultura e parë dominuese Mesoamerikane ishte ajo e Olmekëve, e cila arriti kulmin me rreth viteve 1200 pes. Olmekët kanë origjinë nga ajo që është e lidhur me Mesoamerikën, të tilla si shkrim hieroglifik, kalendar, përparimet e para në astronomi, skulpturë monumentale (kokat Olmec) dhe punimeve dekorative "jade"'.[5]

Ato ishin paraardhës të kulturave të mëvonshme të tilla si Teotihuakan, në veri të Mexico City, Zapotekët në Oaxaca dhe majët në jug të Meksikës, Belize dhe Guatemala. Ndërkohë që perandoritë u ngritën dhe ranë, rrënjët kulturore më themelore të Mesoamerikës mbetën të njëjta deri në pushtimit spanjoll nga Perandoria Aztec.[5] Këto përshinin qytete me me sheshe në qendër, tempuj zakonisht të ndërtuara në baza piramidale, fusha me top mesoamerikane dhe një kozmologji kryesisht të përbashkët.[3]

Ndërkohë që forma e artit si piktura në shpellë dhe gravura shkëmbore datojë prej më parë, historia e njohur e artit meksikan fillon me artin Mesoamerikan të krijuar nga kultura sedentare që ndërtuan qytetet, dhe shpesh, zotërimet.[4][5] Derisa arti i Mesoamerikës është më i larmishëm dhe shtrihet në më shumë kohë se kudo tjetër në kontinentet e Amerikës, stilet artistike tregojnë një numër të ngjashmërive.[1][6]
