Balenat me mustaqe (emri sistematik Mysticeti) formojnë një nënrend të rendit Cetacea, ku përfshihen katër familje:Balaenidae (balenat e duhura), Balaenopteridae (balenat me hulli), Cetotheriidae (balenat e duhura të vogla), dhe Eschrichtiidae (balena e hirtë). Pesëmbëdhjetë lloje të balenave me mustaqe janë përshkruar. Mendohet të jenë ndarë nga balenat me dhëmbë të nënrendit Odontoceti, rreth 34 milionë vjet më parë.
