English: "In executing this drawing, Holbein obviously expected it to be viewed both from the front and from the side. Initially it looks as if the vertical and transverse beams of the cross, instead of forming a right angle, are at a much more acute angle to each other. When the drawing is viewed from the left, however, this impression is dispelled and the picture seems to gain depth. In addition, the strides of the henchman in the foreground appear too broad, but in portraying him this way, Holbein actually already had the view from the left in mind" (Müller, 200). |
