A 6th century Shiva temple rock cut architecture at Badami, Karnataka India

Shiva is carved in many shapes and forms in the temple dedicated to him.

The Badami cave temples are composed of four caves, all carved out of the soft Badami sandstone on a hill cliff in the late 6th to 7th centuries. The temple caves represent different religious sects. Among them, two (cave 2 and 3) are dedicated to god Vishnu of Hinduism, one to god Shiva of Hinduism (cave 1) and the fourth (cave 4) is a Jain temple.

The cave temples were built and refined from 540 to 757 CE. Their architecture is a blend of North Indian Nagara Style and South Indian Dravidian style.

Shiva Ardhanariswara sur la paroi droite de la véranda de la grotte la plus ancienne (fin VIème siècle) du site de Badami. Shiva Ardhanariswara est la représentation du dieu réunissant les principes masculin et féminin. Les piliers à chapiteaux finement sculptés sont dans un excellent état de conservation.

Badami fut la capitale de l'empire des Chalukya de 540 à 757, une période importante dans l'histoire de l'art indien. A l'époque Chalukya, les sculpteurs et artisans ont créé les temples troglodytiques, que l'on peut aujourd'hui visiter, et qui ont donné naissance aux temples dravidiens construits en pierre.
