Notes
Dansk: En dansk menig Jens Jacobsen fra 8. Regiment 5.
English: Jens Jacobsen, a Danish private from the 8th Regiment, 5th Company said: "Just north of Flensburg our company salvaged a field cannon that had been left in a ditch. Lieutenant Schiøtt thought it would be a shame that the Germans should have it. Some passing artillerymen could not take it, as the harness of their horses had sprang. Should we take it? - He suggested. Yes, we readily agreed. A crowd immediately took hold, and a sick mate came up and running". In his report on the infantry reserve retreat from Dannevirke, Major General Carl Caroc mentions that the 8th Regiment dragged a total of two cannons from Flensburg to Gråsten. One cannon, which was pierced, came from Nystaden (Neustadt) and the other from Klues forest (Kluesries). Almost all the regiment's soldiers joined and took turns in dragging the cannons, according to Caroc.
