Libri është një antologji përmbledhëse e 82 dokumenteve - burime parësore - që hetojnë moralitetin, psikologjikë dhe etikën e dhunës ideologjike. Çdo dokument paraqitet me një hyrje të shkurtër dhe një tekst të shkurtër shpjegues. Libri është dizenjuar si një referencë për studentët më seriozë të historisë dhe përdorimit të dhunës.[2]
Libri dokumenton emocionet, principet dhe retorikën e përdorur nga ata që shfaqin dhunë, qoftë në raste tiranie, revolucioni, lufte guerrilase apo terrorizmi.[2]
