Edukimi demokratik është një ideal arsimor në të cilin demokracia është njëkohësisht një qëllim dhe një mënyrë e mësimdhënies. Ai përveq që sjell vlera demokratike në arsim gjithashtu mund të përfshijë edhe teoritë e vetëvendosjes brenda një bashkësie të barabartë, ashtu si edhe vlera të tilla si drejtësia, respekti dhe besimi. Historia e arsimit demokratik zë fill të paktën që nga shekulli XV dhe megjithëse është i lidhur me një numër personalitetesh, duhet theksuar se nuk ka pasur asnjë figurë qendrore, institucion ose komb që ta mbështeste në mënyrë ekskluzive edukimin demokratik. [3]

Edukimi demokratik shpesh është posaçërisht emancipues, me zërat e nxënësve dhe studentëve që janë të barabartë me ato të mësuesve. [4] [5] [6] Ndonëse ende nuk ka një disiplinë të unifikuar që përfshin fusha dhe aspekte të ndryshme mbi edukimin dhe arsimin demokratik, aktualisht ekzistojnë shumë teori të arsimit dhe edukimit demokratik të cilat i qasen atij nga këndvështrime të ndryshme.
