Ekspresionizmi Abstrakt shpesh i njohur edhe si pikturim informal (art informal, joformal) është një stil pikture, i cili u krijua pas Luftës së Dytë Botërore, kur si pasojë drejtimet e Kubizmit, Konstruktivizmi dhe Surrealizmit u zbehën. Ajo u bë lëvizja kryesore artistike në Shtetet e Bashkuara në vitet 1950, kur moda kaloi nga Realizmi shoqëror i viteve 1930, të ndikuar nga depresioni i madh dhe muralizmi meksikan.[1]
Ishte drejtim arti që u krijua për një kohë në Francë (Paris) dhe SHBA (New York). Improvizimet e para të Kandinskit ishin improvizimet pararendëse të stilit të ri të artit, ekspresionizmit abstrakt. Termi u përdor për herë të parë në artin amerikan në vitin 1946 nga kritiku i artit Robert Coates. Figurat kyçe në Shkollën e Nju Jorkut, e cila ishte qendra e kësaj lëvizjeje, përfshinte artistë të tillë si Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Norman Lewis, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gotlieb, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell, Theodoros Stamos dhe Lee Krasner ndër të tjerë.
Lëvizja nuk kufizohej vetëm te piktura, por përfshinte kolazhistë dhe skulptorë me ndikim, si David Smith, Louise Nevelson dhe të tjerë. Ekspresionizmi Abstrakt u ndikua në mënyrë të shquar nga metodat spontane dhe të pavetëdijshme të krijimit të artistëve surealistë si André Masson dhe Max Ernst. Artistët e lidhur me lëvizjen kombinonin intensitetin emocional të Ekspresionizmit Gjerman me vokabularin radikal vizual të shkollave pararojë evropiane si Futurizmi, Bauhaus dhe Kubizmi Sintetik.
Ekspresionizmi Abstrakt shihej si një lëvizje rrebele dhe idiosinkratike, që përfshinte stile të ndryshme artistike. Ishte lëvizja e parë specifikisht amerikane që arriti ndikim ndërkombëtar dhe e vendosi Nju Jork Sitin në qendër të botës së artit perëndimor, një rol që më parë mbahej nga Parisi. Kritikët bashkëkohorë të artit luajtën një rol domethënës në zhvillimin e saj. Kritikë si Clement Greenberg dhe Harold Rosenberg promovuan punimet e artistëve të lidhur me ekspresionizmin abstrakt, në veçanti Jackson Pollock, nëpërmjet shkrimeve dhe koleksionimeve të tyre. Koncepti i Rosenbergut për kanavacën si një arenë në të cilën veprohej, ishte themelor në përcaktimin e qasjes së piktorëve të aksionit. Mbizotërimi kulturor i ekspresionizmit abstrakt në Shtetet e Bashkuara u zvogëlua në fillim të viteve 1960, ndërsa refuzimi pasues i theksit të ekspresionistëve abstraktë mbi individualizmin çoi në zhvillimin e lëvizjeve të tilla artistike si Pop Arti dhe Minimalizmi.[2]
Përgjatë gjithë gjysmës së dytë të shekullit të XX, ndikimi i ekspresionizmit abstrakt mund të vërehet në lëvizje të ndryshme artistike në ShBA dhe Evropë, duke përfshirë Taçizmin dhe Neo-ekspresionizmin, ndër të tjera. Termi ekspresionizëm abstrakt besohet se është përdorur për herë të parë në Gjermani, në vitin 1919, në revistën Der Sturm për t'iu referuar Ekspresionizmit Gjerman. Alfred Barr e përdori këtë term në vitin 1929 për të përshkruar punimet e Vasili Kandinskit.[3] Termi do të përdorej në Shtetet e Bashkuara në vitin 1946 nga Robert Coates në kritikën e tij të 18 pikturave të Hans Hafmann.[4][5]
