Miti i Skënderbeut është një nga mitet kryesore konstituive të nacionalizmit shqiptar.[1][2][3] Në fund të shekullit të nëntëmbëdhjetë gjatë luftës së shqiptarëve dhe Rilindjes Kombëtare Shqiptare, Skënderbeu u bë një simbol për shqiptarët dhe ai u shndërrua në një hero dhe mit kombëtar shqiptar.[4][5][6]

Pas vdekjes së Skënderbeut, arbëreshët (italo-shqiptarët) migruan nga Ballkani në Italinë e Jugut, ku kujtimi dhe bëmat e tij mbijetuan dhe u ruajtën mes tyre në repertorin e tyre muzikor.[7] Skënderbeu u shndërrua në një mit kombndërtues nga shkrimtarët nacionalistë shqiptarë dhe kështu bëmat e tij u shndërruan në një përzierje faktesh, gjysmë të vërtetash dhe folklori.[8] Miti i Skënderbeut është i vetmi mit i nacionalizmit shqiptar që bazohet te një person; të tjerat bazohen në ide, koncepte abstrakte dhe kolektivizëm.[9] Miti i Skënderbeut nuk ishte krijuar nga intelektualët shqiptarë, por tashmë ishte pjesë e folklorit dhe kujtesës kolektive arbëreshe.[10] Sipas Oliver Jens Schmitt, , “sot ekzistojnë dy Skënderbe të ndryshëm: Skënderbeu historik dhe një hero kombëtar mitik siç paraqitet në shkollat shqipe dhe intelektualët nacionalistëTiranë dhe Prishtinë.”[11]

Si hero kombëtar, politikanët shqiptarë në pushtet me kalimin e kohës kanë promovuar figurën e Skënderbeut dhe ai është nderuar dhe vlerësuar në historinë gojore.[4] Bërat e Skënderbeut festohen si lufta për liri nga kontrolli i huaj, arritje etnike dhe kombëtare shqiptare, urtësia e një sundimtari të kaluar shqiptar, një figurë që kapërcen ndarjet multietnike ballkanike dhe një kontribues rajonal në historinë evropiane.[4] Roli i Skënderbeut si një figurë e krishterë që luftoi kundër pushtimit osman (mysliman) të kontinentit është nënvizuar me kalimin e kohës.[4]

Për shkak të burimeve të pamjaftueshme parësore është e vështirë të përcaktohet statusi "heroi i kombit shqiptar" të Skënderbeut. Si komunistët, ashtu edhe krishterët shqiptarë e kanë ndërtuar Skënderbeun në një figurë kombëtare.[12] Shqiptarët bashkëkohorë myslimanë nuk theksojnë trashëgiminë fetare (të krishterë) të Skënderbeut duke e parë atë si mbrojtës të kombit dhe ai promovohet si një simbol shqiptar i Evropës dhe Perëndimit.[13]

Duke qenë se Skënderbeu zë vendin qendror në mitet kombëtare shqiptare, kjo e vështirëson analizën e tij kritike nga historianët.[14] Ata që kryenin një analizë kritike të Skënderbeut, siç bëri historiani Oliver Jens Schmitt, do të akuzoheshin shpejt për kryerjen e sakrilegjve dhe për fyerjen e nderit kombëtar shqiptar..[15][16]

Theksimi i luftës dhe konfliktit të Skënderbeut me osmanët si një simbol për të krijuar një shtet unitar shqiptar ka implikime të paqëndrueshme, sepse ai nuk kufizohet vetëm në Shqipëri siç ishte nën qeverisjen e Hoxhës, por përfshin zonën më të gjerë të banuar nga shqiptarët brenda Ballkanit.[17] Miti i Skënderbeut përfaqëson përbërësin kryesor të debatit për aspiratat e ardhshme të kombit shqiptar.[18]
