Catopuma është një gjini që përmban dy lloje të vogla të maceve të egra aziatike, macen e artë aziatike ( C. temminckii ) dhe macen borneane ( C. badia ).[1] Të dy janë zakonisht me ngjyrë kafe të kuqërremtë, me shenja më të errëta në kokë.[2][3]
Të dy speciet u ndanë nga njëra-tjetra 4.9-5.3 milion vjet më parë, shumë kohë para se Borneo të ndahej nga ishujt fqinj.[4] I afërmi i tyre i gjallë më i afërt është macja e mermertë ( Pardofelis marmorata ), nga e cila paraardhësi i zakonshëm i gjinisë Catopuma u nda rreth 9.4 milion vjet më parë.[5]
Taksonomia
[Redakto | Redakto nëpërmjet kodit]Emri Catopuma u propozua nga Nikolai Severtzov në 1858 me Felis moormensis si specie tipi , i cili u përshkrua nga Brian Houghton Hodgson . [6][3]
