Xhalal ad-Dīn Muhamed Balkhī, i njohur dhe si Xhalal ad-Dīn Muhamed Rumi, gjithashtu i njohur dhe me emrin Mevlana ka lindur më 30 shtator 1207 dhe vdiq më 17 dhjetor 1273, ka qenë poet, mistik, jurist dhe teolog Persian.

Ka lindur në Balkh sot (Afganistan), dhe vdiq në Коnja, sot Turqi. Poezitë e tij janë të shkruara në Persisht dhe të përkthyera në shumë gjuhë të botës. Rumi ka jetuar në kohën e Selxhukëve dhe ka shkruar, përveç se në Persisht, edhe në Arabisht, Greqisht dhe në Turqisht. Poema Mathnawī, kompozuar në Konya, mund të konsiderohet një nga lavdet letrare më të pastra të gjuhës Persiane.[19][20]. Veprat e tij janë lexuar gjerësisht në gjuhën e tyre origjinale në gjithë Iranin e Madh dhe në botën Persisht-folës. [1].[2] Përkthimet e veprave të tij janë shumë të njohura, sidomos në Turqi, Azerbajxhan, Shtetet e Bashkuara, dhe Azinë Jugore. [3]Poezia e tij ka ndikuar në letërsinë Persiane, por edhe Turke, Punjabe, Hindu, Urdu si edhe në literaturat e disa gjuhëve Indo-Arian përfshirë Chagatai, Pashto, dhe Bengali.

Jalal ad-Din Rumi mbledh mistikët Sufi.

Rumi u lind nga Prindër Persisht-folëse,[4] me origjinë nga Balkh qyteti i Khorasan-it, sot Afganistani. Ai u lind ose në Wakhsh, një fshat që ndodhet në lumin Vakhsh në rajonin më të madh në Balkh, që sot njihet si Taxhikistan, [5] ose në qytetin e Balkh, që sot njihet si Afganistan.
