Në shekujt e parë të krishterimit, Afrika prodhoi shumë figura që patën një ndikim të madh jashtë kontinentit, duke përfshirë Shën Agustinin e Hipo, Shën Maurice, Origen, Tertullian dhe tre papë katolikë romakë ( Victor I, Miltiades dhe Gelasius I ). si dhe personazhet biblikë Simon i Kirenës dhe eunuku etiopian i pagëzuar nga Filip Ungjilltari . Krishterimi ekzistonte në Etiopi përpara sundimit të mbretit Ezana të Madh të Mbretërisë së Axum-it, por feja kapi një themel të fortë kur u shpall fe shtetërore në vitin 330 pas Krishtit, duke u bërë një nga kombet e para të krishtera.

Referenca më e hershme dhe më e njohur për futjen e krishterimit në Afrikë përmendet në Veprat e Apostujve të Biblës së Krishterë dhe ka të bëjë me konvertimin e ungjilltarit Phillip të një udhëtari etiopian në shekullin e 1 pas Krishtit. Edhe pse Bibla u referohet atyre si etiopianë, studiuesit kanë argumentuar se Etiopia ishte një term i zakonshëm që përfshinte zonën Jug-Juglindore të Egjiptit.

Xhamia e Madhe e Kairouan, e ngritur në vitin 670 nga gjenerali arab Uqba Ibn Nafi, është xhamia më e vjetër në Afrikën e Veriut.

Islami është feja tjetër kryesore në Afrikë së bashku me Krishterimin, me mbi 40% të popullsisë që janë myslimanë, që përbën rreth një të katërtën e popullsisë muslimane në botë. Rrënjët historike të besimit në kontinent burojnë nga koha e Profetit Muhamed, dishepujt e hershëm të të cilit migruan në Abisini (hixhire) nga frika e persekutimit nga arabët paganë .

Përhapja e Islamit në Afrikën e Veriut erdhi me zgjerimin e perandorisë arabe nën kalifin Umar, përmes Gadishullit Sinai . Përhapja e Islamit në Afrikën Perëndimore u bë përmes tregtarëve dhe marinarëve islamikë . Feja kishte filluar gjithashtu të ndikonte në Mbretërinë Harla në Bririn e Afrikës që herët.

Islami është feja mbizotëruese në Afrikën e Veriut dhe në Bririn e Afrikës . Ajo është bërë gjithashtu feja mbizotëruese në bregun suahili, si dhe në bregun detar të Afrikës Perëndimore dhe në pjesë të brendshme. Ka pasur disa perandori muslimane në Afrikën Perëndimore që kanë ushtruar ndikim të konsiderueshëm, veçanërisht Perandoria Mali, e cila lulëzoi për disa shekuj dhe Perandoria Songhai, nën udhëheqjen e Mansa Musa, Sunit Ali dhe Askia Mohammed .
